United Stellar Republic Aviation Authority (USRAA) rules part 51§ 1.9 (W) States
“ILS (Instrument Landing System), localizers must have a safe system to maintain only one (1) aircraft in the localizer critical area at a time."

What does that mean to you as a pilot?

  1. While shooting the ILS approach you know that you are the only one in the approach path at a time.
  2. Radio waves can bounce off ships and vehicles on the ground or in the air. By excluding them there should be no false reflections that make the instruments read incorrectly.
  3. If the approach is at an uncontrolled airport you are taking it on faith that other aircraft hear you and will stay out of the critical areas while you use the approach.
  4. Most airfields that can afford to invest in an ILS system have a staffed tower. One of their functions is to make sure that the ILS areas are clear for approaches.
