Profanity

From Rise: The Vieneo Province

To keep in-game communication welcoming, readable, and appropriate for a broad audience, Rise: The Vieneo Province uses an automated profanity and content moderation filter in all player chat channels.

This system is designed to align with our age rating targets while still allowing natural, everyday conversation.

What the Profanity Filter Does

The chat filter automatically detects and blocks messages containing:

  • Strong profanity
  • Explicit sexual language
  • Graphic sexual references
  • Hate speech or slurs
  • References to sexual violence

The goal is not to censor normal speech, but to prevent language that would be inappropriate or disruptive in a Teen-rated environment.

What Is Allowed

The filter is intentionally context-aware. Ordinary language, slang, and non-explicit expressions are allowed, including:

  • Everyday anatomical words used in a non-sexual context
  • Mild expressions or idioms
  • Compound words that are not used as insults
  • Technical or role-play terminology
  • Normal sentence structure and phrasing

In other words, players should be able to talk naturally without feeling like they are “walking on eggshells.”

What Is Not Allowed

Messages will be blocked if they include:

  • Explicit sexual acts or descriptions
  • Sexual phrases directed at another player
  • Slurs targeting race, gender, or sexual orientation
  • Encouragement or glorification of sexual violence
  • Attempts to bypass the filter using altered spelling, spacing, or punctuation

The system is designed to recognize these even if they are disguised with symbols or unusual spacing.

How the Filter Works (High Level)

Without going into technical implementation details, the filter works by:

  • Normalizing messages (ignoring capitalization and punctuation tricks)
  • Detecting known explicit phrases as complete expressions
  • Checking individual words only when they are clearly used as standalone terms
  • Avoiding substring matches inside ordinary words

This approach helps prevent false positives while still catching deliberate attempts to use prohibited language.

Recent Improvements

We have recently made several improvements to the profanity filter:

  • Removed overly aggressive word matches that caused false positives
  • Switched to phrase-based detection where context matters
  • Improved handling of spacing and punctuation evasion
  • Added language-specific moderation support for future localization
  • Ensured consistent behavior across all chat systems

These changes were made to improve fairness, accuracy, and player experience.

Compliance and Ratings

Our profanity and content moderation system is designed to support:

This includes allowing mild language and non-graphic references while blocking explicit or harmful content.

Reporting and Enforcement

Automated filtering is only one part of moderation. Repeated attempts to bypass the filter or intentionally disrupt chat may still be reviewed by moderators.

If you encounter inappropriate behavior that is not caught automatically, please use the in-game reporting tools.

Final Note

We want Rise to feel alive, social, and authentic — without becoming hostile or uncomfortable.

Chat moderation exists to protect that balance, not to silence normal conversation.

Thank you for helping keep the community respectful.
