Aerodynamic Heating

Friction causes heat.
Drag causes friction
At very high altitudes and very high speeds the individual molecules in the Atmosphere need to be pushed out of the way of an object reentering.
Since each molecule has Mass. The molecules resist moving. This friction causes heating.
