Stealth (Dex)

Stealth is a mechanic used to determine whether a player can enter restricted areas (such as an FBO) without being detected. It is resolved using a d20 roll with modifiers based on player skills and environmental conditions.

Mechanics

To attempt a stealth action (e.g., Sneak into FBO), the player rolls:

 d20 + Stealth Skill

The result is compared against a calculated Stealth DC based on local conditions. If the result meets or exceeds the DC, the player is successful.

Stealth DC Calculation

The base Stealth DC starts at 0 and is modified by the following factors:

Colonists in Territory

  • +1 for every 100 colonists in the territory (capped at +10)

Colony Type Modifier

  • +5 if the colony is a Township
  • +5 if the colony is an Airport
  • –2 if the colony is a Mine, Farm, or Refinery

Defense Towers

  • +3 for each active defense tower in the colony

Time of Day Modifier

Time of day is represented by the Sun Elevation scalar:

  • –1.0 = Midnight
  • 0.0 = Sunrise/Sunset
  • +1.0 = Noon

The time of day modifier is calculated as:

 Time of Day Modifier = 5 × Sun Elevation
 

This yields a range from –5 (midnight, easiest) to +5 (noon, hardest).

Example Calculation

A player attempts to sneak into an FBO at an Airport colony with the following conditions:

  • 750 colonists in territory → +7
  • Airport colony → +5
  • 0 defense towers → +0
  • Sun Elevation = +0.8 → +4

Stealth DC = 7 + 5 + 0 + 4 = 16

Outcomes

  • If the player's roll (d20 + Stealth skill) is ≥ Stealth DC, they gain temporary illicit access.
  • On failure, the player is denied access and suffers a Lawfulness penalty:
