The up-link is an Inventory item that can be installed at Category:Colonies to connect the colony to the global network. This allows the colony to:

participate in the Futures_Market
be listed for trade with other players on the Deois website (must be within 50 km)
integrate with the portal so that trade settings can be remotely managed and monitored
